Sabra Dipping Co., LLC issued a product recall in early April after a routine inspection revealed that the product might have been contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. This bacterium can lead to Listeriosis, a serious bacterial infection that can result in death. There were 30,000 cases recalled in total.

If you purchased a contaminated product, you should either throw it out immediately or return it to the point of purchase for a full refund. If you have eaten contaminated hummus, it is a good idea to visit your doctor. Preventative antibiotics can kill the bacteria before it becomes a serious problem.

So far, no illnesses have been reported from the contaminated products. Listeriosis usually affects the very young, the very old, pregnant women and those who are immune compromised. Early symptoms include fever and muscle aches and can be accompanied by diarrhea or gastrointestinal symptoms. In older adults, Listeriosis can be accompanied by septicemia or meningitis, and can kill if not treated quickly.

The process of issuing a recall with the Food and Drug Administration is complicated but rigid. All primary purchasers of the product are to be notified in writing, but sometimes information slips through the cracks. Even though the recall is public knowledge, some stores may still have affected products on their shelves. It’s a good idea to check any known recalled product to make sure it’s safe to eat.

If you or someone you know has gotten sick after eating a recalled product, seek medical help immediately. Treatment can be expensive and time consuming, and result in lost work and wages. We’re here to help when you need us. Please contact us for a free consultation.
