Why Multi-Vehicle Crashes Are Often FatalA multi-vehicle crash on I-40 left three people dead and one injured on November 11. The accident shut down I-40 westbound for nearly seven hours as first responders worked to extinguish vehicle fires prevent further incidents. The wreck involved a head-on collision between two tractor-trailers, and the resulting devastation left three families mourning untimely losses.

How it happened

According to WBIR:

“A tractor-tractor with no trailer was traveling east on I-40 when it crossed the median and hit a tractor-trailer hauling automobiles and a passenger vehicle. Both rigs caught fire, and the drivers of both of them were killed. The driver of the other vehicle involved was also killed. A passenger in that vehicle was injured and transported by Lifestar to UT Medical Center. Both a TDOT spokesperson and witnesses on the scene reported there were multiple explosions after the accident, and a large fire sent a huge plume of black smoke into the air.”

The forces involved with two large trucks colliding at highway speeds are almost inconceivable. The first truck, with no trailer, crossed the median and sent a 2016 Nissan Sentra rolling several times after the collision launched the car airborne. Barely slowed, the truck plowed into another tractor-trailer head-on. It is a miracle that no other vehicles or drivers were injured or involved. The thoughts and prayers of everyone here are with the families of those
